DAY 40 (2) -- Port Chester to New York City, NY

 Mon., 4 October 2021

Today was overcast with some very light drizzle at times. However, Cousin Jacob and I knew that the late afternoon held downpours in the forecast. It was nice having the cloud cover and Jacob's company. He has cycled extensively on NYC trails, so he always knew where we were and what to expect. Even had a scenic connecting trail option which proved lovely.

I started the day again with the mild nausea of vertigo, but thankfully the meclizine held it at bay. I was actually able to climb a bit off of the seat on some of the short hills.

Several friends questioned me about having to ride in or around NYC. Jacob assured me that most of the ride was on paved greenway paths, and most of those are part of the East Coast Greenway.

Having spent a 16-week assignment in the Bronx (housed in Yonkers, and then Bronx's City Island), I enjoyed seeing familiar road names and locations.

Here are views at the bridge heading over to City Island.

We did take a lunch stop at a nice cafe in Marble Hill--Jacob and Bobby's old stomping grounds.

This was another greenway shot showing how the trail sneaks around the natural rock formations in the forests.

Then as we approached the Hudson Greenway, we took a quick break at the George Washington Bridge and the lighthouse there. You see Jacob and his recumbent in one shot, and me, lookin' as old as I had been feeling the past few days, in another. Love the display board showing the book.

We could see down the river to the city that fog (or drizzle!) was obscuring the Manhatten skyline, so we rode pretty quickly the rest of our day's route to 42nd St. Light rain began just as we arrived. The bottom dropped pretty quickly once we made it inside. We were graciously welcomed into the home of LeeAnne Hutchison and Grant Neale by Grant. (LeeAnne was away on a gig.) Both bikes found a home on the 27th floor balcony in Hell's Kitchen.

Jacob and I said our goodbyes as he headed to visit some friends for the night, then heading the next day to pick up his bike here and head up the river to Yonkers to retrieve his car and head home. Grant and I had a great visit, and he explained his upcoming project, The Butterfly Effect. I was sorry I couldn't stay long enough to see the innovative production! We had a nice dinner at a nearby Italian place. Was thrilled to have to show my vaccination card to eat indoors. It was still raining, so outdoor dining was not possible. Pretty sure I slept like a log, because I didn't wake the next morning until my alarm.

For those who want the overview, interspersed with some pics, this one's for you.
