Ellsworth to Orland, Maine
No along the ride photos to share today. The terrain reminded me of Athens and Hartwell (Challenge of the Centuries 62mi option we did several times years ago). Some pretty steep climbing. Some quick downhills. My max speed today was 36.5mph. But the average was around 9mph, I believe.
Gives you an idea of the climbing involved.
I used the Adventure Cycling maps today. I had not compared the route to the Atlas recently to refresh my mind. Nor had I gone to the Adventure Cycling site to look for updates. I followed a route, but ended up about eight miles out of the way. If one could end up in any sweeter place than Blue Hill, Maine, I don't see how. What a lovely town.
In a bank parking lot, where I was figuring what my route needed to be to get back on course, a woman approached me to ask about my safety vest. She asked if I was following the East Coast Greenway, as she has a relative heading out for a week of riding it in Florida next month. As a rule, one can count on delightful interactions.
Speaking of interactions, if you haven't seen my Instagram post, you may not know that a yellow jacket decided to sting me just after entering the trailer this afternoon. :-( Was changing into my crocs, and when I slid my foot in, I shouted that I had been stung. I have used ice (a few times), lidocaine, taken a benedryl, and applied a baking soda paste. It's still red. But worse, it hurts to put pressure on my foot. The sting is right on the top of the foot, and my shoes or socks touching it is extremely uncomfortable. I am not sure I can wear a shoe tomorrow. Not from swelling. From pain.
It's been a long time since a stinging insect has popped me like that. Oooh wee. That thing smarts!
If I am able to put on shoes and ride, it will definitely be a short ride. I may try to squeeze in a quick tune-up following the abuse of the DEST.
30.2 miles (a little different ride than I had planned, but a good day overall...until the sting.) / 105.64
